The Lakeland Terrier is a small, workmanlike terrier with a rectangular head, folded V-ears, and a harsh, colorful coat.  The outline is square and the movement is brisk, built for going to ground in the Lake District.

A small, wiry earth dog who can share an apartment if walked and given a job; coat stripping and a ready terrier voice at the door.

The Lakeland Terrier comes from the English Lake District, where it was used to bolt fox from stone walls and fell country.  The AKC and UKC both place it in the Terrier Group.

Temperament

Lakelands are typically bold, busy, and affectionate with their own people.  They will hunt vermin if given the chance and may bark to announce visitors.  They need more work than a quiet toy.

Training

They learn quickly and will take advantage of soft rules.  Keep sessions short and socialize them with other dogs.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly and strip or trim the harsh coat a few times a year.

Shedding

Low.

Health

Lakeland Terriers are generally hardy.  Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and lens luxation can occur in some terrier lines; keep the dog lean.
