The Skye Terrier is a long, low, heavily coated terrier with a veil of hair over the eyes, dropped or prick ears, and a long tail. The body is twice as long as it is tall.

A long, low terrier for a house; a coat that is a commitment, a reserved voice with strangers, and more length than a tiny flat usually wants.

The Skye Terrier comes from the Isle of Skye in Scotland, where it was used to bolt otter and fox from cairns. The AKC and UKC both place it in the Terrier Group.

Color: Black, blue, gray, silver, fawn, or cream; black points are typical
Coat: Hard, straight, and flat outer coat about 5½ inches long, with a short, woolly undercoat

Temperament

Skyes are typically loyal to their own household and reserved with strangers. They can be stubborn and do not always enjoy other dogs. They need more walking than their short legs suggest.

Training

Be consistent and start socialization early. They remember unfair handling.

Care and grooming

Brush the long coat several times a week so it does not mat. Keep this long-backed dog lean and limit jumping off furniture.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

Skye Terriers may develop disc disease and a breed-specific liver condition (Skye hepatitis). Do not let them jump from heights.
